For years, I thought I knew how to do laundry. Like most people, I filled the washing machine, added detergent, pressed a few buttons, and went. But no matter what brand of detergent I used, my clothes often came out dull, scratchy, or with that faint, musty smell that never went away.
Only recently did I discover something surprising: the problem wasn’t the detergent, the washing machine, or the water. It was me. Or more precisely, the problem was with the way I was using the detergent dispenser.
A hidden problem that most of us ignore.

Over time, thick layers of residue can accumulate in this drawer: soap scum, fabric softener residue, and even mold if the area remains damp. If this happens, the washing machine will no longer rinse or wash properly, and your clothes will be far from fresh.
I thought wiping it off with a damp cloth would be enough. But that wasn’t the case. The dirt that had built up beneath the surface was slowly ruining my laundry and preventing the washing machine from working properly.
Step one: thorough cleaning.
Cleaning the underwear drawer turned out to be much easier than I expected, and the difference was immediate.
Here’s what I did:
Remove the drawer completely. Most washing machines have a small release tab near the center. Gently press down and pull the drawer out.
Submerge it in hot water. I filled the sink with hot, soapy water and let the drawer soak for about 15 minutes. This helped loosen dried-on residue that had built up over the years.
Thoroughly scrub every nook and cranny. Using a toothbrush and mild detergent, I scrubbed the edges, compartments, and small passages where water and detergent flow. A vinegar-water mixture worked great for stubborn stains.
Clean the inside of the compartment. Before replacing the drawer, I cleaned the inside of the washing machine where it sits. This area also accumulates dirt and often creates a musty smell if left unchecked.
Dry completely. Once the drawer was clean, I allowed it to dry completely before replacing it.
After that, the drawer looked brand new and for the first time in months my laundry smelled fresh and was really clean.
