Variations & Tips
To keep this close to the 5-ingredient spirit but still adaptable, think in terms of smart swaps. For a slightly lighter version, use Greek yogurt in place of some or all of the sour cream; it keeps the tang while trimming the richness. If you prefer a different flavor profile, substitute cream of mushroom or cream of celery soup for one or both cans of cream of chicken. You can also change the cheese: Monterey Jack, Colby-Jack, or a sharp white cheddar all melt beautifully and shift the character of the dish just enough to feel new. For more texture and color without complicating the recipe too much, fold in a cup of frozen peas or mixed vegetables (no need to thaw fully) before baking. If you’d like a bit of heat, add a pinch of cayenne or a few dashes of hot sauce to the mixture. Finally, if you don’t have buttery crackers on hand, crushed cornflakes or panko breadcrumbs tossed with butter make an excellent, crisp topping that still delivers that satisfying contrast to the creamy filling.
