These chocolate dipped pretzel rods are one of those simple little treats that disappear faster than you can set them out. My Grandma June used to line them up on a glass platter for the kids, but the adults kept “testing” them, one after another, until the plate was mysteriously empty. They’re salty, sweet, and crunchy, and they look festive without a lot of fuss—perfect for birthday parties, movie nights, or anytime you want something homemade that feels special but doesn’t keep you in the kitchen all day.
Arrange the finished pretzel rods in neat rows on a rectangular glass platter so the shiny chocolate and colorful sprinkles really stand out against your kitchen counter. They’re great with cold milk for the kids and coffee or tea for the adults. You can also bundle a few rods in clear treat bags with a ribbon for party favors, or tuck them into a dessert board alongside cut fruit, cookies, and a small bowl of nuts for an easy, crowd-pleasing snack spread.
Grandma June’s Chocolate Dipped Pretzel Rods
Servings: 20–24 pretzel rods
Ingredients
20–24 pretzel rods
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
1 tablespoon neutral oil (such as vegetable or canola), optional for smoother dipping
1 cup assorted colorful sprinkles
Parchment paper or wax paper, for lining
Rectangular glass platter, for serving
Directions
Line a baking sheet or your speckled tan countertop with parchment or wax paper. Make sure your rectangular glass platter is clean and dry so it’s ready for arranging the finished pretzels.
Pour the sprinkles into a shallow bowl or small plate and spread them out in an even layer so they’re ready for quick decorating.
Place the chocolate and the neutral oil (if using) in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20–30 second bursts, stirring after each, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. This usually takes about 1–2 minutes total. Do not overheat or the chocolate can seize.
Let the melted chocolate sit for 1–2 minutes to cool slightly. You want it warm and fluid but not so hot that it slides right off the pretzels.
Hold one pretzel rod by the end you plan to keep bare for handling. Dip the other end into the melted chocolate, tilting the bowl and rolling the pretzel to coat about two-thirds of its length. Gently tap the pretzel on the side of the bowl to let excess chocolate drip off so you get a smooth, shiny coating.
While the chocolate is still wet, either roll the coated part of the pretzel rod in the sprinkles or hold the pretzel over the sprinkle bowl and spoon sprinkles over it, turning to cover all sides. This helps keep the sprinkle layer even and crunchy.
Lay the decorated pretzel rod on the lined surface, chocolate side up, making sure they don’t touch each other. Repeat the dipping and sprinkling with the remaining pretzel rods, working in batches so the chocolate doesn’t set before you add the sprinkles.
If the chocolate starts to thicken as you work, rewarm it in the microwave for 10–15 seconds and stir until smooth again. Continue dipping and decorating until all the pretzel rods are coated.
Let the pretzel rods sit at room temperature until the chocolate is fully set and firm to the touch. This can take 20–40 minutes depending on your kitchen temperature. For faster setting, you can place the tray in the refrigerator for about 10–15 minutes, but don’t leave them in too long or the chocolate can develop a dull look once it warms back up.
